Travel Gear Buying Guides for India (2026)

Luggage in India has a harder life than the brochure photos suggest. It gets thrown onto conveyor belts at Delhi T1, shoved under a sleeper berth on the Rajdhani, dragged over broken pavement outside the station, and left on an autorickshaw roof in a July downpour. A bag that looks good on day one but loses a wheel on the third trip isn’t a bargain at any price.

Most of what goes wrong is predictable: cabin bags a couple of centimetres too tall, wheels that crack on the first rough platform, locks that jam on 000, and warranties that cover manufacturing defects only.

This page covers what to look for and links to our detailed guides as they go live.

Our guides

Trolley bags and suitcases

The category most people get wrong, mostly by buying on looks and colour. Shell material, wheel quality, empty weight and the warranty terms matter more.

  • Best trolley bag in India: seven in-stock picks across cabin, medium, large, a set of 3, a soft-sided option and a premium polycarbonate cabin bag, plus hard vs soft luggage.

Backpacks

For commuting, college and short trips. Strap stitching, zips and rain protection matter more than the brand.

What to look for, bag by bag

Cabin bags

Indian domestic airlines commonly allow 7 kg of cabin baggage in a bag of about 55 × 35 × 25 cm, wheels and handle included. These figures vary by airline and fare type, and they change, so check your airline’s page before you buy. The weight limit is the one that bites. A hard-shell cabin trolley can weigh 2.5–3.5 kg empty, which leaves you around 4 kg for everything else. Also check the listed dimensions against your airline’s limit: some “cabin” trolleys are listed at 56–58 cm tall, which may be refused at a strict gate.

Check-in trolleys

A medium 65–70 cm bag holds a week’s clothes for one person. A large 75–80 cm bag fills up to 20–25 kg quickly, which is over many domestic check-in allowances, so a big bag isn’t always the cheaper option once you pay excess baggage. Polycarbonate shells flex and pop back; polypropylene is lighter and cheaper but scuffs more; ABS is the cheapest and the most likely to crack.

Backpacks

For train travel and short trips, a 30–45 L backpack beats a trolley on stairs, footbridges and crowded platforms. Look for padded shoulder straps, a chest strap, a separate laptop sleeve and a rain cover. Nothing short of a rain cover survives a Mumbai July. Our backpack guide has seven picks.

Things every travel bag should get right in India

Rough handling. Expect your check-in bag to be dropped, stacked and dragged. Eight spinner wheels (four double wheels) spread the load better than four single wheels, but wheels remain the most common failure on Amazon.in reviews across every brand.

Trains and rough roads. Spinner wheels are made for airport floors. On platforms and broken pavements you’ll tilt the bag onto two wheels, so the handle matters too.

Monsoon. Hard shells keep rain out better than fabric, but water can still get in through the zip. Pack electronics and documents in a zip-lock pouch. Fabric bags need a day to dry out before you store them, or they’ll smell.

Locks. A TSA-approved lock matters if you fly to or through the US. For domestic travel a normal 3-digit combination lock is fine. Lock complaints (“only opens on 000”) show up across many brands, so set and test your code at home before the first trip.

Warranty. Most luggage warranties cover manufacturing defects only, not damage done by airlines or rough handling. Keep the invoice and the warranty card, and photograph the bag when it arrives so you can show its condition.

Common questions

What size trolley bag should I buy? For hand-baggage-only flights, a 55 cm cabin bag. For a week away, a 65–70 cm medium. For a month or international travel, a 75–80 cm large. Our trolley bag guide has specific picks.

What is the cabin baggage limit on Indian domestic flights? Commonly 7 kg in a bag of about 55 × 35 × 25 cm, but it varies by airline and fare. Check your airline’s current rules before you fly.

Is hard or soft luggage better for India? Hard luggage handles rain and stacking better; soft luggage is lighter, often expandable, and has outside pockets. For check-in bags that will be thrown around, most people are better off with a polycarbonate or polypropylene hard shell.

Does luggage warranty cover airline damage? Usually not. Most warranties cover manufacturing defects such as a faulty zip or wheel, not breakage caused by handling. Report airline damage at the airport before you leave the baggage hall.
